Waterloo Station Useful Information
Waterloo is undoubtedly the busiest railway terminal in the UK. Over 88 million passengers pass through here every year, and that’s not counting the millions who use the London Underground station and Waterloo East! The only station in Europe more busy is the Gare du Nord in Paris. Clapham Junction in London actually has more trains than Waterloo, but there are fewer passengers and less space there.
Waterloo is a very well known area in London, and the name is recognised by people from all over the world. This is partly due to the famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815, where Napoleon lead the French army against the British, Dutch, Germans and Prussians. However, this battle site does not refer to the place in London; it was in fact a town in Belgium. It still helps it stick in your mind though! The Battle of Waterloo inspired the 1974 ABBA hit, which won them the Eurovision Song Contest. They won about a girl being defeated by love (though Napoleon was actually defeated after Waterloo). The Swedish band visited London for a photo shoot when ‘Waterloo’ was released. There are other famous songs which relate directly to the London location, such as ‘Waterloo Sunset’ by The Kinks and the debut album from ‘Dirty Pretty Things’, ‘Waterloo to Anywhere’.
It’s no surprise that there’s such a great demand for Waterloo taxis; every day, people flock to and from the station. Some have a daily commute to their jobs, some are visiting other UK destinations and some have heavy bags and luggage for longer trips; in this instance, cabs to Waterloo are much more preferable to public transport. There’s a meeting place at Waterloo which has been popular for many years; under the four faced clock that hangs above the concourse. If you’re unfamiliar with the station, this is a place you can’t miss!
Waterloo is located near South Bank in London, which is on the River Thames. This is where you’ll find the London Eye - one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. If you choose to take a ride in one of the futuristic pods, you’ll get great views across London’s skyline. You can also take a stroll along Waterloo Pier and look at the landscape from ground level - perhaps a preferable option if you’re scared of heights! From here, it’s easy to take a Waterloo minicab to wherever you need to go.
