Paddington Station Useful Information
Paddington is one of the most well known railway stations in the UK. Even people who have never been to London, England or Great Britain have heard of it! This is mostly due to the famous children’s books by Michael Bond, which feature Paddington Bear. As the story goes, a lone bear was found deserted in the station, with a note attached to him saying “Please look after this bear”. The books became so famous that they have been made into television programmes, and there is still merchandise sold in the station shop to this day. There is also a statue of the the character in London Paddington Station.
When it was first built in 1838, this station served London as its terminus of the Great Western Railway. There is a lot of history here, and over the years the railway station has been developed and rejuvenated to bring it up to date. In fact, a whopping £63 million was recently spent to give Paddington a huge overhaul; one of the main new features is a centrepiece called ‘The Lawn’. Here, you’ll find shops and cafes in a glass and steel structure. This will be a great meeting place for those coming into London. If you are visiting, make sure you arrange a London Paddington station taxi to complete your journey.
Another useful feature that this station has is the Heathrow Express - a train that runs directly to Heathrow airport. There are even check in desks here for those travelling with an airline. Before this service was introduced, it was very difficult to get to the airport without a car; you’d either have to take a coach, ask someone for a lift or take a cab from Paddington Station. Thank goodness times are moving forwards!
With 14 platforms, this railways station is very busy at all times; its central zone 1 location makes it the perfect spot to commute from or to come into if you’re new to the city. Paddington Station taxis are on hand 24/7 to take you wherever you’d like to go in London; this is a particularly good choice of transport if you don’t know your way around and don’t fancy negotiating with the London Underground! If you are brave enough to take the tube, there is a station here. Whether you choose this or Paddington Station minicabs, we hope you thoroughly enjoy your stay in London.
