Greenford Useful Information
Greenford is a pleasant suburb of Ealing perhaps most well-known for being the birthplace of rock band The Who, which regularly played at the Oldfield Tavern. They even reputedly first met legendary drummer Keith Moon after a gig there - although you may be disappointed if you were to ask a Greenford taxi driver to take you to this historic live music venue, as it has since been demolished to be replaced by a living accommodation development.
Aside from its connection to the classic lineup of Roger Daltrey, John Entwhistle, Keith Moon and Pete Townshend, those with a penchant for rock and roll may also be interested to know that Greenford is also home to the London Motorcycle Museum, which boasts a collection of hundreds of vintage and British motorbikes. Located just off Oldfield Lane, it is very easy to reach by a taxi in UB6, and will provide plenty of interesting and educational exhibits to any biking enthusiast.
As well as being historically notable for being the site of William Perkin’s revolutionary dye factory, Greenford was also the site of one of the earliest speedway tracks, and a taxi in Greenford could also take you to Betham House, built by Edward Betham in the late 18th Century, or - if a stroll takes your fancy - to the attractive parkland, based in the old grounds of the Ravenor Park Farm, which now host the annual Greenford Carnival in July.
Horsenden Hill is another notable local feature possibly worth a visit. Rising 85 metres above sea level, it has been the site of an ancient hillfort, and an of anti-aircraft battery during the Second World War, and is also well-known as a good vantage point on a clear day from which to get a great view across West London and the Home Counties, including the new Wembley Stadium, and a great place to watch planes taking off and landing at Heathrow Airport. Golf players may also be interested to know that Horsenden Hill also boasts not one, but two full golf courses, if you’re in the mood to fill a few holes while in the area!
Greenford may not be as frenetic and vibrant as many of the historical areas of central London, but if you are looking for a relaxed place to spend a sunny day, it could be just the place to visit; especially as its proximity to other exciting West London districts and good transport links mean that it is only a short UB6 taxi journey away from tourist attractions in Northolt, Perivale and other parts of Ealing.
