Barbican Useful Information
Barbican London Underground station was originally called Aldersgate Street for its actual location, but has of course since been renamed for the nearby Barbican Estate and the Barbican Centre itself, which may have been voted London’s most ugly building in 2003, but can nevertheless boast being the largest performing arts centre in Europe, with a crowd capacity of almost 2000 in its main hall alone, not to mention its separate exhibition halls, theatres and cinemas.
So, where else might you want to travel to by taxi from Barbican London Underground station? A taxi in EC1 could take you to various attractions in the area, including the Museum of London, which is built by the remaining ruins of the original Roman wall which defended Londinium during Roman occupation of the site in the second century, and houses collections of artefacts telling the story of the city’s history from prehistoric settlements along the Thames, through the Roman occupation, Anglo-Saxon and mediaeval eras, through to the modern day subsequent to the rebuilding following the Great Fire of London in 1666.
If architecture is your cup of tea, and you’re more in the mood for the classical vibe rather than the Barbican Estate’s modern brutalist ziggurats, it is only a short distance, especially by EC1 taxi, to several major landmarks, including Christopher Wren’s world-famous Saint Paul’s Cathedral, which was the city of London’s tallest building until as recently as 1962, and is still the second tallest religious edifice in the UK (after Liverpool Cathedral, in case you’re curious!)
If you’re still in the mood for visiting religious buildings after Saint Paul’s Cathedral, you can also find the church of Saint Bartholomew the Great nearby, which, built in 1123, is notable for being the oldest surviving parish church in the City of London.
If you’re more in the mood for modern art than local history, the Tate Modern gallery is only a short ride away from the station by Barbican taxi, as are several other art galleries, including such venues as the White Cube and the Whitechapel Art Gallery, and of course you probably wouldn’t even need to take an EC1 taxi to visit the Barbican Art Gallery if you’re already at Barbican station or the Barbican Estate, given that it would just be a short walk away! If you do need to get a taxi, however, it’s always easy using Tick Tock Taxi - just enter your destination on the site or in our phone app, and you will instantly be given the chance to make a booking with the nearest cab office.
